My daddy always told me if I wasn't careful I'd end up digging ditches. And he was right! I've got a new one to add to my resume.

I got a call yesterday from my pastor asking if I was busy, and I'd already spent the morning putting out applications (I think I may get one of them, nbs - matress/furniture salesman extrodordanaire?) so I went over. He was laying water pipe himself, and he's almost 70, so he wanted help.

So I grabbed a pickaxe and shovel and dug out a narrow trench about twenty five feet by maybe 15 to 18 inches deep in the caliche fill of his driveway. I surprised the crap out of him and his wife with how much I got dug in four hours, that caliche is hard. Who cares you ask? I had fun! I love that kind of work. The only shame is it doesn't pay crap.

I got a sweet sunburn, (I is a redneck again!) and some sweet blisters. Plus I get to go out again thursday and dig some more, plus play let's find the water pipe!!! No point whatsoever, just neener neener neener. I get to play in the dirt and you don't! HA!!!

Plus he paid me extra (like I said, he was really surprised) and I got a bonus in cherry tomatoes! MUHAHAHAHA!!!! Pointless metallurgy will follow later, but I'm about to have to go feed the pizzaless masses of Copperas Cove. HI HO SILVER, AND AWAY!!!!

You're pretty strong if you dug that much in a short time. Obviously worth the bonus and the cherry tomatoes! You should make some wicked speghetti sauce!

Well that's pretty impressive. 25 feet long and 18 inches deep. Maybe father does know best.

For some reason when I started reading your article, the movie "Cool Hand Luke" popped in my head. "That ditch is Boss Kean's ditch. And I told him that dirt in it is your dirt. What's your dirt doin' in his ditch?"

Heh heh, I think it was my dad telling me about punishment when he was in navy basic back in Nam. The instructors would make them dig a foxhole (why foxholes in the Navy, I have no idea) then toss a cigarette in and tell them to fill it. Then they'd get the noobs that didn't know, by asking which way the cigarette was pointing. If they didn't know, they'd make them dig down and find it.

Sweet manual labor... shame it doesn't pay well...

Still, it pays better than me turning in a few applications, then sitting at home blogging or zapping aliens.

Ya should have seen what I did today when I went back and finished the job.
