There's a scene I like in Rushmore. The kid playing Max has just met Bill Murray's character, and they're siiting, facing forward. Max turns to Bill with this completely out of place question, and says "You were in Vietnam?" "Yeah" "Were you in the shit?" Bill Murray turns his head, with that deadpan look that says I hate myself and the entire world, then faces forward and says "Yeah, I was in the shit."

Guess where I'm going......maybe. I talked to my parents on the phone today, and a couple of the parishes at the edge of New Orleans are opening up to let people in to get their stuff. No power, no lights, no water, primitive.

You carry everything in, and everything out yourself. Three days limit, and you have to have someone who has proof that they lived there. So my sister and brother-in-law are talking about going in and clearing their stuff out, and I got asked if I could help since I'm still on terminal leave.

I won't say where, but they got ahold of a current sat. photo showing their apt. building. Roof damage, but it looks like the second story wasn't hit by the storm surge.

I know it sounds crazy to even think about going in, but just think, all your belongings, plus a car they left at a hurricane shelter. It's not flooded now, and it's out of the worst of the damage and insanity. That they're letting people go in at all to those parts says quite a bit.

They're planning on taking at least one truck and a trailer, a genny, gas, water, food, and so on. I've just been starting to think of what to take. Don't know what weapons they're allowing in, (I mean people are shooting at relief workers) but if no guns, I'm pretty well fixed on lighter stuff and non-lethals (knives, mace, chain, modified bat, pipe, etc,) MREs, water, tools-ax, saws, chainsaw, shovel, knives, etc.

Flashlights/lanterns and plenty of batteries. Bleach (for water, just in case), clothes, radios, et cetera. Should hear back with a plan in a day or two, and if we go, leave at the end of the week. Exciting, and a little scary. Don't know for sure how much and what we'll get, maybe there won't be any trouble at all, then again.......

Looking forward to it either way. I mean I always have wanted to see New Orleans.............

Good luck and God's speed. I mean, if you go, that is.
