"All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
-Samuel Gompers, founder of the AFL-
Welcome to another long weekend. You sit there at home, and completely fail to remember the true meaning of this holiday, those who.....oh wait, this holiday's for you.
Do you work? Ever? Have you held a job for five minutes? Built enormous skyscrapers? Created a nifty blog site? Painted yourself blue and acted as a performance artist? Would you like fries with that? This is your holiday.
Created in 1882 by a machinist from Jersey named Matthew McGuire, it was first celebrated in New York in order to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." And metaphorically speaking, that's you sugar-wumpkins.
The party continued to grow, state by state, promoting labor through trade exhibits, parades, picnics and heavy drinking, until Congress finally took notice and passed it into law, 1894. It was also picked up early on by beautiful Canadia.
Today, similar labor days are practiced around the world, but only we on the North American continent are cool enough to have a holiday right at the beginning of the school year.
It's exactly 203 years old today. So all you soldiers, computer programmers, waiters, prostitutes, lawyers, microbiologists (love ya sis), sanitation engineers, former McDonalds employees, blacksmiths, brewers (especially the brewers, bless your souls), gas station clerks, professional fishermen, and anyone who's ever worked, anywhere, sit back and enjoy the parades, crack one open, and take it easy today. This holiday's for you.
If you want to know more, check out the department of labor site, here.

(P.S. For all ya'll Texans out there, on this day in 1836, Sam Houston was first elected president. Woot!!!!!)
