Bang. Bang. Bang. on the relay baby......BANG BANG....i can't hear you.

Worked on a friend's car, and fixed a stuck relay in a power module (electric switch, basically) for a fuel pump by banging on it. I'm sure I'll have to replace it, but it's working for now. I love working on cars.

I've run into this before. One day I got up and went to start my Mustang, nothing. So I pop the hood, try again, and watch as gasoline just starts to literally pour out the top of the carb. I call my dad up.

"Okay, you've got some grit or something blocking the float valve."
"Okay"
"Go inside, get a 9/16" six sided combination wrench."
"Alright."
"Look at the front of the carborateur. You see right next to the square on the front."
"The power body valve"
"That's right. Now just to the left of it, but not on it, whack it hard."
"Whack it?"
"Whack it."
"Ummm......okay."
"Just make sure you don't hit it hard enough to make a spark."
Me with my hands and arms soaked in gasoline, "Right......."

Sure enough, it worked beautifully. 9/16", Why not? Did I mention that sometimes I love working on cars?

Sometimes, I don't even whack 'em. I just threaten them with the sledgehammer....................

Hahahahaha...when we arrived on island, we bought a piece of crap car that died the very evening we bought it. We were able to keep it working until our vehicle arrived.

We just had to whack it with a hammer, hehe.

Being the ditz that I am, I don't remember what part required the beating, but a measured blow would get it going.

PS - All sexual innuendo in this comment is unintended. I swear.

Carburator calibration isn't it grand, but the question is why a 9/16 and not a 5/8 wrench? I generally use the largest crescent hammer that will fit!

Ummm. See comment one. Seriously, favorite tools include:
a. 8 pound sledgehammer
b. 4 lb. blacksmith's hammer
c. mallet
d. 18" screwdriver
e. 22" channel locks
It doesn't always fix the car, but doggone if you don't feel better afterwards.

why a 9/16 and not a 5/8 wrench?

Maybe he thought it was funnier? It's what I always passed along after, and I thought so. They usually got the idea and used whatever was handy.
