ugh....grunt........

Herro....hans brix. I've recently begun (or tried to begin anyways) yet another hobby. I've gone through many since joining the army, and even retained some.

Despite frequent lack of time, past interests include (but are not restricted to)reading (well duh....), TV (given up), video games (given up.....mostly damn it), crosstitch (freakin' awesome), glass painting, automotive restoration/repair (very useful), cooking (useful when you've got time), languages, scherenschnitte (fancy paper cutting), insane-o gardening, and distance running.
And most of those are since joining the army.

However I started looking at metal working for body work on my Mustang (see hobby say six or so), and got interested in metal casting. The more I looked at it, the more interesting it became. Why? Because. Ugh. Grunt. Real man make fire. Make metal pointy stick. ugh. spill molten aluminum all over shoes. ugh. (well, not yet anyways.......) However it looks like I can run by the hardware store, and for 'bout 20 bucks, I can set up a small sand casting foundry and get started. We shall see.

Nothing fancy for my first run, I'm just going to melt aluminum and cast ingots in a cupcake mold. Maybe this weekend if I can get the material I need to build a simple furnace. Maybe. And in other news my marathons this weekend in Austin. Don't know my number yet, packet pickup's on Friday, race is on Sunday. So later for now, I'm going to go see if I can get the stuff I need to set my pants on fire. Literally of course, not figuratively you freakos.

Oh yeah, after the usual caveat that metalcasting is extremely dangerous, do not attempt without knowing what the hell you're doing, I'm not responsible for anything you may try, and suing me won't bring your feet back, et cetera, if metal working interests you, here's a cool site with lots of links. (Mostly sand casting, but lots and lots of cool stuff)Link

Do you have too much time on your hands? Best wishes for your marathon running and on all your other activities.
