And today, we're focusing on Iraq!
That's right boys and girls, today's episode of name your favorite empire focuses exclusively on the country of Iraq! Me, I favor ancient Ctesiphon.......mmmm Ctesiphon, where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are left alone if they run faster than the goats. What's your favorite? There's so many to pick from.
What now makes up Iraq has been part of/conquered by CTESIPHON, (of course), Sumeria, Akkadia, the Medes (or one group of the Persians), the Chaldean Dynastys under Babylonia, Assyria (it's captial, Niniveh, is the area known today as Mosul, and those little devils are just as rascally as ever), Ancient Babylon, Neo-Babylon, Cyrus (those frickin' persians again), the Macedonians (Alexander), colonies at least of Romans and Hellenic Greek types, the Seleucids, the Parthians, the Sassanids (isn't that just a fun word to say), the Lakhmids, the Byzantines, an assload of sundry Caliphates, a couple of shades of Turkmen (Black Sheep and White Sheep), the Mamalukes, the Ottomans, the Safavids (iran AGAIN), the kurds, at various points (did ya know Salah al-Din (Saladin), the great Muslim that took back Jerusalem from the Christians during the Crusades was Kurdish?), the British Empire, (at least twice, more if you count when they attacked the Kurds with wiley pete, three times if you count now), conquered from within a couple of times since becoming a monarchy, then "republic", the U.S., and me. I am an Empire of one. All hail the mighty conquerer. (alright, we kind of gave it back, but still.)
Who's your favorite? (and don't pick the Ummayad Caliphate, just because everyone always does.) Extra points will be awarded if you post pictures of yourself answering dressed as a sphinx, Semiramsis (the fabled queen that founded Baghdad) or Nebaca.....Nebachein.....erm, Nabbachenezzer. ((Yes regis, that's my final answer. No, well how would you spell it anyway. Big talk for a guy that does cameos in woody allen flicks and bad game shows.....))
Ctesiphon, f--- yeah!
